National Apple Pie Day is May 13, celebrating America’s favorite dessert. According to the American Pie Council, nearly one in five Americans decide upon apple pie over others, with 35 percent of these surveyed announcing they’ve apple pie for breakfast.
When Was Apple Pie Invented?

According to Reader’s Digest, apple pie was invented in England and carried over using pilgrims to Jamestown in the seventeenth century. However, the recipe became distinct and modern. The English used animal fats, wheat, and water to create the pastry, calling them “coffins,” and have been filled with beef or venison.

Once added to America, the pastry has become flakier, and the meat is replaced with imperfect apples. The Civil War also saw Union and Confederate soldiers commandeer farms to bake pies. An article in The New York Times in 1902 proclaimed the apple pie as the “American synonym for prosperity”, with troops in the 20th century pronouncing they have been preventing for “mother and apple pie.” In 1999, Vermont deemed apple pie as its reliable national pie.
